Why Heating Controls MatterS?

Efficient heating controls are the key to keeping your home comfortably warm while preventing energy waste. By optimising your heating system, you can enjoy a cozy home environment and lower your energy bills.

Types of Heating Controls:

Programmer (time control): A timer or programmer provides you with the flexibility to regulate when your heating and hot water system operates and when it shuts down.

This functionaility is valuable as it allows you to customise your central heating to align with your household's usage patterns. For instance, if you're away from home or do not need heating overnight, you can program the heating system to turn off during these periods.

Room thermostats: Room thermostats play acrucial role in preventing your home from overheating. They operate by turning on the heating system until the room reaches the temperature you've selected, and then they switch it off until the temperature decreases.

Programmable room thermostats: A programmable room thermostat is a versatile control unit that integrates both time and temperature settings into one device. It empowers you to establish distinct temperature levels for various times throughout the day. In some cases, rather than employing a single programmer for the entire house, certain heating systems may utilise two programmable thermostats—one for the upstairs and another for the downstairs area. This setup offers more precise control over the heating system and can enhance comfort and energy efficiency within different zones of your home.

Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs): Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) serve to regulate the flow of hot water through the radiator they are attached to, but they do not directly control the boiler. Their operation is based on sensing the surrounding air temperature. When the room temperature exceeds the setting on the TRV, the valve partially closes, reducing the flow of hot water into the radiator. Conversely, if the room temperature falls below the TRV setting, the valve opens wider, allowing more hot water into the radiator to increase heating.

TRVs are adjustable and can be set to various positions by turning them clockwise or counterclockwise. Typically, they are labeled with a scale ranging from 0 to 6, where zero (0) indicates the valve is off, and six (6) represents full openness.

Smart heating controls: Smart heating controls encompass all the functionalities of traditional controls, including a programmer (timer) for regulating heating on/off times and thermostats to manage home temperature. However, smart controls have the added benefit of being internet-connected, providing enhanced features and convenience.

Some of the more sophisticated capabilities of smart heating controls include: Intuitive User Interfaces, Remote Control, Learning Algorithms, Geo-fencing and Advanced Control Functions

These smart heating control systems provide not only added convenience but also increased energy efficiency and cost savings, making them an appealing choice for modern homes.

Benefits of Using Heating Controls:

Cost Savings: Heating controls help you reduce energy consumption, resulting in lower heating bills.

Improved Comfort: Maintain a consistent, comfortable temperature in every room.

Energy Efficiency: Reduce carbon emissions and minimise your environmental impact by using energy wisely.

Commonly asked heating control questions

What heating controls should i have?

A well-rounded central heating system, whether it's powered by boilers or heat pumps, should, at a minimum, incorporate essential components such as a programmer for time-based control, at least one room thermostat, and, if radiators are in use, thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs). For systems featuring a hot water cylinder, the inclusion of a cylinder thermostat is also recommended.

In addition to these fundamental elements, modern heating systems offer a range of supplementary control functions. These advanced features enhance the ease of operating the system effectively while maximising its efficiency.

You can enhance or install heating controls without the need to replace your existing boiler. It's advisable to explore new heating control options if your current setup lacks essential components such as a programmer, at least one room thermostat, or thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) on your radiators. Modern room thermostats, for instance, are equipped with more precise temperature sensors, and many smart control systems offer additional energy-saving features to further optimize your heating efficiency.

how do i use my heating controls?

A wide variety of heating controls are available, so for tailored guidance, it's recommended to consult with your installer or refer to the manufacturer's manual. If you don't have immediate access to the manual, you can often find it online.

As part of our service Bambu installers will give you a full demonstration on how to use and adjust your heating controls.
